Intermediate Team Maths Challenge

I am delighted to report that for the first time in Beaconsfield High School’s history, our A team won their round of the Intermediate Team Maths Challenge. The girls are now through to the Regional Final (Oxfordshire, Bedfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire). Enormous congratulations to Avnish Nijjar, Amreet Dulay, Emma Miller and Hannah Tidd.

Also for the first time in our school’s history, we entered a second team into the competition. Anna Barlow, Katie Burling, Victoria Smith, Lizzie Bradley came a very impressive 8th out of 18 teams, beating the A teams of most other schools in the competition. The girls were competing against Year 10 students from 13 schools, many of which were Grammar Schools.

The girls worked extraordinarily hard in preparation for the competition, participating in rigorous training sessions every week for three months, and in addition taking part in Maths Club on Thursday lunchtimes for six weeks practicing team competition technique.

For the pre-prepped round on Base 6 Arithmetic, the girls worked out how to multiply, divide, add and subtract fractions and decimals in Base 6, and solve equations including quadratics in Base 6. This is a field of Mathematics the girls developed themselves with nothing relevant in textbooks, and nothing useful on the topic to be found the internet, although they had excellent support from Miss Marsh.

The girls will now be preparing for the Regional Final in May
