Y7-9 Science Club make Simple Motors

Can you make a simple motor out of ordinary household items – you CAN indeed, as we found out in Year 7-9 Science Club. All you need is a length of wire, a battery, a magnet and something that will conduct both electricity and is magnetic – in this case, we used an old key. This experiment uses the relationship between electricity and magnetism to make the key spin when the circuit is connected – watch the video to see

A detailed explanation of the forces at work and how they cause the key to spin can be found here: http://www.exploratorium.edu/snacks/stripped_down_motor/

Do try it at home! (CAUTION– this will get quite hot if you leave it connected for more than a minute at a time)
